Senior Digital Twin Engineer
About Gradyent
A quarter of all energy in the world is consumed to heat buildings. District heating is the most significant opportunity for cities to decarbonise. Gradyent is on a mission to help cities to decarbonise faster by digitising energy networks with our digital twin. Backed by a group of top investors, we are scaling the platform globally.
We currently have a team of 150+ people and offices in the Netherlands, Germany, and Hungary. Our team combines programmers and energy specialists, data scientists and top-tier consulting alums. We are expanding quickly and looking for a Digital Twin Engineer in the Netherlands.
What you will do
Our tech team is structured into several specialized groups: Back-End, Front-End, Digital Twin, and Cloud. We are now looking for a Senior Digital Twin Engineer to strengthen our Digital Twin team, which includes software engineers, digital twin engineers, and data analysts.
As a senior member of the team, you will play a key role in designing and evolving the intelligence layer of our SaaS platform—a fusion of physics, mathematics, and machine learning that simulates, analyzes, and optimizes heat networks. You will lead the development of generalized, high-performance software that enables our Customer Solutions & Operations colleagues to configure and deploy digital twin models across diverse projects.
You will take ownership of complex engineering challenges, such as improving model fidelity, control strategies, parameter estimation, and optimization techniques. These models span pipe flow calculations, heat source modeling, demand forecasting, and time-delayed heat transfer.
Our high level stack: Python, GCP, UbiOps, DuckDB, MongoDB, Parquet, Polars.
Responsibilities
Lead the design and implementation of scalable, performant Python code for digital twin applications.
Architect and evolve subsystems within our digital twin platform, ensuring they integrate seamlessly into the broader system landscape.
Drive the research and development of advanced modeling techniques, control systems, and optimization strategies.
Translate complex engineering principles into efficient and accurate physical models.
Collaborate cross-functionally with software engineers, solution engineers, and data analysts to deliver impactful features.
Mentor junior and medior engineers, guiding them in technical decision-making and best practices.
Take ownership of larger epics and product components, including planning, execution, and delivery.
Continuously improve our software development practices, including CI/CD pipelines and agile workflows.
Who you are
NOTE: We only consider applicants that are already based in The Netherlands
BSc/MSc in Applied Physics, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in a similar role, with a strong track record of technical leadership and delivery.
Deep expertise in Python, including performance optimization and advanced package usage (e.g., Polars, NumPy, Pandas).
Strong grasp of software design principles, capable of redesigning legacy code and owning large parts of the codebase.
Experience designing and implementing system architectures and data pipelines.
Proven ability to research, implement, and optimize numerical algorithms and physical models.
Solid understanding of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and control systems.
Experience with Git, CI/CD, and agile development practices.
High degree of ownership, autonomy, and intrinsic motivation.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Find yourself checking a lot of these boxes but doubting whether you should apply? At Gradyent, we support a growth mindset for our teams through all stages of their careers. If you meet some of the requirements and you share our values, we encourage you to apply. As part of our ongoing commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, we’re invested in building teams with a wide variety of backgrounds, identities, and experiences
