Digital Twin Engineer

Gradyent is looking for Digital Twin Engineers to help us develop our cutting edge technology.

Full-time · Rotterdam, Netherlands

About Gradyent

quarter of all energy in the world is consumed to heat buildings. District heating is the most significant opportunity for cities to decarbonise. Gradyent is on a mission to help cities to decarbonise faster by digitising energy networks with our digital twin. Backed by a group of top investors, we are scaling the platform globally.

We currently have a team of 150+ people and offices in the Netherlands, Germany, and Hungary. Our team combines programmers and energy specialists, data scientists and top-tier consulting alums. We are expanding quickly and looking for a Digital Twin Engineer in the Netherlands.

What you will do

Our tech team consists of several teams: the Back-End, Front-End, Digital Twin and Cloud team.

We are looking for a digital twin engineer to join our Digital Twin team (consisting of software engineers, digital twin engineers and data analysts). We are a passionate team at the intersection of software development and engineering, aiming to maximize our sustainable impact through our SaaS platform. As part of the Digital Twin team, you will be working on a layer of intelligence (a combination of physics, mathematics and machine learning) that simulates, analyses and optimizes heat networks. As a digital twin engineer you will be building generalized software that can be configured by the colleagues in the Customer Solutions & Operations team. As a digital twin engineer you specifically focus on improving our models, control strategies, parameter estimation, and optimization strategies. These models could range from pipe flow calculations to heat source modelling, and from demand forecasting to time delayed heat transfer.

Our high level stack: Python, GCP, UbiOps, DuckDB, MongoDB, Parquet, Polars.

Responsibilities

  • Understanding the hydraulical and thermodynamical behaviour of heating systems

  • Writing scalable and efficient Python code where performance is key

  • Using and extending our digital twin software in state-of-the-art projects

  • Research and development of new experimental digital twin features

  • Collaborating with software engineers and solution engineers

  • Take lead in larger projects/epics where you will guide several junior engineers in day-to-day

  • Managing your tasks, planning, and potentially a sub-component of our product

Who you are

NOTE: We only consider applicants that are already based in The Netherlands

  • BSc/MSc in applied physics, mathematics, mechanical engineering, computer science or equivalent

  • 1-5 years of experience in similar role

  • Expertise in Python software development and software engineering principles. At least 1+ years of hands on experience

  • Team player

  • High degree of ownership and strong intrinsic drive

  • Experience with Git

  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics

  • Knowledge of simulation, control systems, parameter estimation, and/or optimization

  • And nice to have (not required):

    • Knowledge of machine learning and ML OPS

    • Familiarity with GIS data and QGIS

Find yourself checking a lot of these boxes but doubting whether you should apply? At Gradyent, we support a growth mindset for our teams through all stages of their careers. If you meet some of the requirements and you share our values, we encourage you to apply. As part of our ongoing commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, we’re invested in building teams with a wide variety of backgrounds, identities, and experiences
